Stressful Jobs Decreases Person’s Life Span, Here’s Why

Living in a corporate world that demands a lot of things with so little control about it can really become so frustrating. A recent study has found that the constant stress brought by having such kind of job decreases your life span.

An assistant professor of organizational behavior and human resources at Indiana University's Kelley School of Business and the study's lead author Erik Gonzales-Mule has claimed that young workers having a highly stressful job with little control are believed to die at an early age than those who are in control of their job.

CBS News reveals that researchers have also found a probable reason to believe that the reverse was in fact, true. According to them, people in high demand jobs who also had a higher control rate when it comes to their work is likely to have a reduced chances of early death by 34 percent.

However, experts have noted that while the study is yet to prove the cause-and-effect relationship between job control and death, it has already shown a connection between these factors which is a good point to begin with. Gonzalez-Mule has also explained that there are still a number of ways that shows a lack of on-the job control might affect overall health and the risk of dying.

In one of their statements reported by WebMD, Gonzales-Mule said that he and his colleagues were allegedly able to define having low control levels in various jobs as the inability to set one's own goals, decide how to accomplish tasks and prioritize work.

Additionally, GonzalesMule said that examples of these jobs that are traditionally considered as having a "low control level" would include construction workers, auto mechanics, or nursing aides. Jobs that are known to naturally possess a higher level of control on the other hand, include supervisor, craftsmen and as well as construction inspectors.

Furthermore, experts have emphasized that the whole point of the study is to allow people to find ways of coping with the stress. As Gonzales-Mule suggests, being able to have a certain type of control over one's job is likely seen to divert the stress into relief and can possibly promote a good kind of stress wherein a person will have the drive to work fast and use his intense concentration in finishing tasks. In turn, experts believe that it will then cause the person to develop a sense of accomplishment and mastery to his own self.
