Pokemon Go players are playing it wrong according to a Niantic visual designer. The ARG game is supposed to be enjoyed with friends as they go out and collect Pokemon in the real world.
Meet Dennis Hwang, Pokemon GO Visual Designer
Dennis Hwang worked for Google before assuming the position of Niantic Visual Design Director. He is the one in charge for the designs players see in Pokemon GO. He was recently interviewed by the Verge regarding the success and future plans for the mobile ARG game.
Hwang was asked if there was anything he would like to change in Pokemon GO when it comes to design. He says that Pokemon GO players are not doing it right which resulted sometimes in accidents or injury. He is "saddened" in seeing Pokemon GO players glued to their screens and ignoring their surroundings.
The design head said that Pokemon GO should be a group experience that should be enjoyed outside the house. Hwang believes he could make that happen by modifying the Pokemon GO design. For example, he may design the icon and details to be presented in such a way that the player will not have to stick closer to the smartphone or tablet screen. Hwang said that they could also add some sort of animation or audio clues to help improve the game play.
Future of Niantic Mobile Games
Hwang also mentioned Niantic's future games without going to any specifics. He said that the developer has invested heavily in the ARG platform. The company is also talking to several potential partners who are interested in enhancing mobile game with the real world such as Ingress and Pokemon GO. He would not name the possible partners though. Currently, Niantic has partnered with Nintendo with the Pokemon GO mobile game. This may also mean that any future Niantic game will also be an ARG.
