'True Detective' Season 3 News & Updates: HBO Chief Casey Bloys Talks Series Production’s Status; 2017 Release Date Not Possible?

"True Detective" season 3 has long been overdue and latest talks have it that fans will still not see the crime drama on the small screen in 2017. As "True Detective" has been on hiatus for more than a year now, HBO programming chief Casey Bloys finally updated fans about its status.

In a recent interview with EW, HBO head Bloys discussed about renewing another original series of the network, "Westworld." He was also asked about other shows that came and are still airing on HBO. As for the updates on "True Detective," Bloys honestly admitted that the production is not yet in the works. In fact, he revealed that writers have not yet started penning season 3, but he hopes to get good news next year.

"They're thinking about ideas, and when they find something, that's when I'll hear from them," Bloys said about the show's showrunners. "I don't have anything to report on either of them other than they're thinking about what the best-next version is," he added.

Possible Reason for "True Detective" Season 3 Delay

There were a lot of speculations that plagued the series' second season, saying its low ratings caused the show to be at risk of cancelation. The installment starring Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Taylor Kitsch, and Vince Vaughn received a lot of criticism as it was compared with the premiere season featuring Matthew McConaughy and Woody Harrelson. With season 1 declared as the most-watched freshman series in HBO's history, critics had a lot to say with the dropping numbers. Looking at the figures though, season 2, which garnered an estimated 11.3 million total viewers, was only a tad from season 1's 11.9 million total viewers.

Bloys previously spoke up about "True Detective," debunking all cancelation rumors. He expressed his intention of airing another installment for the series which he said is an important creation to the network. He assured fans by saying that the series is "not yet dead."

The fate of "True Detective" though is still unclear, most especially that director Cary Fukunaga already made it final that he is not doing the series anymore. HBO re-signed writer Nic Pizzolatto though which gave the series another hope. However, the writer was reportedly busy at the moment hence the delay of "True Detective" season 3.

It has also been reported that season 3's concept is yet being formulated. Bloys, on the other hand, is expecting the writer to start the installment next summer since the network still has a lot of other shows in its lineup like "Westworld" season 2 and "The Night Of" season 2.

With that said, it seems impossible for 2017 to accommodate "True Detective" season 3, so fans can hope to see the next installment in 2018 at least.
