‘Grey's Anatomy' Season 13, Episode 10 Spoilers: Why Winter Finale Cliffhanger Favors Meredith And Alex's Romance

"Grey's Anatomy" season 13, episode 9 left viewers with a major cliffhanger - whether or not Alex ends up behind bars. However, what some fans might miss to read between the lines from the winter finale cliffhanger is the possibility of Meredith and Alex's budding romance.

Meredith And Alex's Romance

In all of its irony, some critical Merlex fans must be happy to see the debacle Alex (Justin Chambers) is going through at the moment. Episode 9 titled "You Haven't Done Nothin'" wrapped up leaving Alex on the brink of a tacky circumstance whether to accept the plea bargain agreement and spend two years in prison, or to let Jo (Camilla Luddington) testify before the court that Alex is innocent.

At this point, no matter how Alex and Jo try to work out what they have now and protect each other, there seems to be loopholes. For one, Jo hid from Alex the truth that she is married and is trying to run away from her abusive husband. Second, being with Jo didn't make things go right for Alex. Many Merlex shippers should believe that the real cliffhanger here is actually if Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Alex could spark a romance.

Merlex Romance: The Compelling Evidence

As Cosmopolitan sees it, there is no more compelling evidence that Alex and Jo are still in love with each other. To solve this puzzle and convince viewers that the cliffhanger actually favors Meredith and Alex tandem, neither Alex nor Jo expressed in the last episode that they still want each other. Second, they never got back together.

During the hiatus of Alex and Jo's relationship, the former has deepened her relationship with Meredith more by their Waffle Sundays and that could take a few notches above their friendship, even without them knowing. If Merlex detractors don't see the budding romance of the characters necessary, they only need to look back to the time when Meredith left Alex a voicemail saying: "There were five of us, and now it's just you and I. And it can't be just me. It can't be." She never said this to Cristina (Sandra Oh) and Derek (Patrick Dempsey) when they left Grey Sloan.
