How To Take Advantage Of This Technique In Each Battle On Pokémon Sun & Moon

Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon has the so-called Same Type Attack Bonus or commonly known as the STAB technique. For experienced Pokémon Trainers, this technique might sound familiar but for those who have just arrived in Alola, know that this battling method will help you deal bonus damage to enemy Pokémon. Here's a guide on how to take advantage of STAB in each battle on Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon.

Pokémon Sun And Moon - What Is STAB?

Same Type Attack Bonus or STAB is a technique used in battles to deal with bonus damage by executing particular moves of certain Pokémon. Each Pokémon falls under a specific type the same goes with each move. Using a move similar to a Pokémon type earns you bonus damage. The STAB strategy has been a staple in both games and series since the beginning. Take note that a Pokémon executing an attack that is akin to its type will give you 50 percent damage bonus.

Pokémon Sun And Moon - How To Take Advantage Of STAB

Within the span of the Island Trials, Same Type Attack Bonus is very much conducive to begin with. You can survive the first couple of tests even with just this strategy. To make things clearer, let's use Starter Pokémon for this strategy. Popplio is a Water-type Pokémon. Using the Water-type attack Water Gun will reward you Same Type Attack Bonus. Little is a Fire-type Pokémon. Using the Fire-type attack Ember will give you STAB.

However, Rowlet might be confusing you among the three Starters. Rowlet falls under Flying and Grass types. It has two starter moves-Tackle and Leafage. For you to earn STAB, you use Leafage to attack because it is a Grass-type move. Remember that Popplio, Litten and Rowlet's final evolution are all dual types which means more chances for STAB.

Pokémon Sun And Moon - Does It Apply To All Pokémon Moves?

If you are asking if this battle strategy applies to all Pokémon moves, unfortunately the answer is no. STAB deals with damage only, otherwise it cannot be used for attacks that do not involve damage even if the Pokémon and the move are of the same type, say Primarina's Baby-Doll Eyes. Also, moves that have a set amount of damage is not eligible for the bonus, say Gastly using Night Shade and other attacks like Mirror Coat, Dragon Rage and Seismic Toss.

Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon are now available on Nintendo 3DS.
