Battle Of The Selfie Cameras: Vivo V5 Versus Oppo R9s Plus

Christmas and New Year is fast approaching. By now you've already made plans on what to wear, how much money you're going to spend, where to go, and who you're going to be with (if not, then you're welcome to celebrate with me and my family...LOL). Now, the only problem left is what camera phone you should use in these upcoming events. The last thing you want is taking so many pictures and waking up the next day only to realize 70 percent of the pictures you've taken are blurry, unfocused and dark. Don't worry, I got you covered on what are the best selfie phones in the tech market right now.

Vivo V5 and Oppo R9s Plus

The Vivo V5 was launched in November. Its price tag is PHP 12,990 ($261). The Oppo R9s Plus will be launched this December. Price is said to be CNY 3,499 ($507). I know, by now you must be thinking the Vivo V5 is way better in terms of price, but let's try to compare the two phones first before we jump the gun, shall we? Specs and features based on GSM Arena:

Vivo V5 versus Oppo R9s Plus

Network. The Vivo V5's networks are GSM, HSPA, and LTE. Oppo R9s Plus networks are GSM, CDMA, HSPA, EVDO, and LTE. I will give this round to the Oppo R9s Plus because it has many networks.

Body. Body dimension of the Vivo V5 is 153.8 x 75.5 x 7.6 mm and body weight is 154 g. As for the Oppo R9s Plus, body dimension is 163.6 x 80.8 x 7.4 mm and body weight is 185 g. If you've been reading my previous articles, you know that my ideal weight for a phone is 140-145 g. I will give this round to the Vivo V5.

Display. Vivo V5's display type is IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen, 16M colors, display size is 5.5 inches, and display resolution is 720 x 1280 pixels. Display type for the Oppo R9s Plus is Capacitive touchscreen, 16M colors, display size is 6.0 inches, and display resolution is 1080 x 1920 pixels. As much as I like lightweight phones, I also like larger screens due to my passion with mobile gaming. Plus, it really is hard to type in text messages with small screens and nothing beats watching a "video" in large screens. I will give this round to Oppo R9s Plus.

Platform. Vivo V5's OS is Android OS, v6.0 (Marshmallow), the chipset is MediaTek, MT6750, and GPU is Mali T860, CPU is a 1.8 GHz Octa-core Processor and GPU is Mali T860. For the Oppo R9s Plus, OS is Android OS, v6.0.1 (Marshmallow), the chipset is Qualcomm MSM8976 Pro Snapdragon 653, CPU is Octa-core (4x1.95 GHz Cortex-A72 & 4x1.44 GHz Cortex-A53), and GPU is Adreno 510. I think I will give this round to the Oppo R9s Plus.

Memory. Internal memory of the Vivo V5 is 32 GB and 4 GB RAM. As for the Oppo R9s Plus, internal memory is 64 GB and 6 GB RAM. The Oppo R9s Plus wins this round.

Camera. Vivo V5's front camera is 20 MP (yeah, 20 MP), the rear camera is 13 MP, and video is 1080p@30fps. Front camera of the Oppo R9s Plus is 16 MP, the rear camera is also 16 MP, and video is 2160p@30fps, 1080p@30fps. Now, this depends on the user. Personally, I like to be behind the camera instead of being in front of the camera, because I for one ain't that photogenic. But I will give this round to the Vivo V5 because a 20 MP front camera for a smartphone is unheard of.

Battery. Vivo V5's battery is 3000 mAh. Talk time, music play and standby time are unknown. Oppo R9s Plus' battery is 4000 mAh. Talk time, music play and standby time are also unknown. I will make this round a tie.

Features. Sensory features of the Vivo V5 are a fingerprint, accelerometer, proximity, and compass. Sensory features of the Oppo R9s Plus are a fingerprint, accelerometer, gyro, proximity, and compass. However, the Oppo R9s Plus has a "fast battery charging" feature. I will give this round to Oppo R9s Plus.

Final verdict

The tally is Vivo V5 with 2 wins and Oppo R9s Plus with 5 wins. Overall, the Oppo R9s Plus excels in performance, but in terms of buying a phone at an affordable price, the Vivo V5 will be my choice. I think a 20 MP front camera smartphone for $261 is something you don't want to ignore if you're into selfies.

Well, that's it. I believe it that the Vivo V5 is the best smartphone you can get for the upcoming Christmas and New Year parties. If you know of any smartphone that surpasses Vivo V5's 20 MP front camera, I would really like to know.
