What’s The Best Small Car? 2017 Honda Fit Versus The 2017 Chevrolet Sonic

Over the last couple of years, consumers and car owners have been slowly drifting to hatchbacks as an alternate option for compact sedans. The bigger luggage space in hatchbacks gives it an advantage compared to the smaller sized trunk of sedans, a feature that makes hatches ideal for small families who love to travel. In this feature, we compare two hatchbacks and see how they compare to each other so we can leave you to decide which to buy after, the 2017 Honda Fit or the 2017 Chevrolet Sonic.

Luggage Space Is A Key Factor For Hatch Backs

Both hatchbacks are similar in design and space capacity. The Honda Fit and the Chevy Sonic both have five doors and also offer the same seating capacity for five, including the driver. Although, four adults is the ideal capacity since fitting three at the back can be a struggle especially for people with more than average body frames. Rear seats on both cars can be folded to give more luggage space. The rear seats of the Honda Fit called "magic seats" can be folded, flipped to the side or can also be removed to give the superior advantage to the Sonic's rear seats that can only be folded.

Engine Difference And Options

The 2017 Honda Fit comes in a 1.5liter four-cylinder engine that puts out 130horse power to the wheels. Most buyers opt to buy the continuously variable automatic transmission for convenience, but petrol heads still have the option to change gears themselves with the optional six-speed manual transmission. On the other hand, the base model of the Chevrolet Sonic comes with a bigger 1.8liter four-cylinder engine that gives 183horse power to the wheels. A six-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmission are also available for Chevy's hatchback. Aside from the bigger and stronger engine, the Sonic offers an option for a 1.4liter turbocharged engine, which surprisingly still gives the same power output but have a stronger torque, resulting in a quicker acceleration.

Economy Ratings

The Fit gets an estimated fuel economy rating of 29 miles per gallon in the city and 40 miles per gallon on the highway, while the Chevy Sonic has an estimated fuel economy rating of 24 miles per gallon in the city, 38 miles per gallon on the highway. Although, unofficial reports say the 1.4liter turbo engine of the Sonic gets a better fuel economy rating out of all the options. Both cars have excellent economy ratings, however, these can only be achieved by going for the automatic transmission options, not unless you are a near perfect driver who never misses the gears.

Other Options Are Out There

Consumers are not expected to limit their options to only the 2017 Honda Fit and the 2017 Chevrolet Sonic, as there are still other economical hatchbacks in the market. One option that consumers are also looking at is the new Ford Fiesta, which is the top-selling car in Europe. The Fiesta is a good choice, not unless you are in the United States since it will only be sold in Europe, South America, and Asia. Either way, both cars are good choices, better check with your local dealer and ask for a test drive to know which car gives you the most comfort and what would fit your lifestyle.
