5. Midnight Special

This is a story about a father's love to an eight-year-old son possessing a "unique gift". The father is hunted by a a religious sect and a government task force. He teams up with two other people in order to raise and protect the boy in a secret location. The film is filled with full-on chase scenes that has world changing implications.

Director Jeff Nichols says, "However absurd this sounds, 'Midnight Special' is more grounded than 'Mud'. I really wanted to make a 1980s John Carpenter film like 'Starman'. I love the way those films look."

4. 10 Cloverfield Lane

Starring: Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman, John Gallagher, Jr.

Director: Dan Trachtenberg

Released: March 11, 2016

This film is a one-location thriller. It tells us a tale of a young woman who wakes up in an underground cellar following a car accident. The woman fears that she may have been abducted. The "captor" is a doomsday prepper. He tells her that he saved her life from a chemical attack that left the outside world uninhabitable. The woman is confused as to what to believe. The tension builds up as she decides to escape.

J.J. Abrams produced this small $ 5M movie. It was initially entitled 'The Cellar' or 'Valencia' but was changed to '10 Cloverfield Lane' the last minute.

3. Green Room

Starring: Anton Yelchin, Imogen Poots, Patrick Stewart, Alia Shawkat

Director: Jeremy Saulnier

Released: April 1, 2016

This film features a young punk rock band. Excitement arises when they found themselves locked in a green room in a secluded place. This all happened after a strange violence transpire during their show. The main antagonists of the story involve a white supremacist and his group of Neo-Nazi skinheads.

This film is a product of the writer-director of 'Blue Ruin', an excellently reviewed indie thriller from 2015.

2. Arrival

Starring: Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker

Director: Denis Villeneuve

Released: November 11, 2016

Mysterious spaceships have landed in 12 locations around the world. This prompted a linguistics professor to join the government first-contact team. Her job is to instantly device a method of communication with the extraterrestrial visitors and uncover their intentions.

The film has received recognition from many critics saying it "deserves serious treatment as a work of art."

Released: May 20, 2016

This film take us back to the 70s, when a private eye hired a leg-breaker. The two must work as team to find a missing girl and uncover the unrelated mysterious death of a fading porn star. Their investigations uncovered shocking revelations of conspiracy.
