‘Rogue One' Review: Finally A 'Star Wars' Movie Everyone Can Relate To

One of the most anticipated movies of this year is “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”. Everybody had been waiting for it since it was announced last year that the movie was in the making. This is a review of the said movie coupled with some spoilers.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” recently hit theaters all over the world on Dec. 16 and it has been received with mixed reviews, fairly more favorable ones than those nitpicking on the silly details of the movie. The movie is a standalone movie in the popular “Star Wars” anthology and it could not have been better. “Rogue One” has been dubbed as the “Star Wars” movie that everyone can understand and finally relate to without having the burden to understand the entirety of the “Star Wars” universe.

The story of “Rogue One” is set in a timeline between the events in “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith” and “Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope”, which were released in 2005 and 1977 respectively. Though the movie was created based on an original story, it did not stray away from the whole story. It introduced new characters and a story that will support the canon and will coincide with the main story.

Rogue One” introduced the formation of the Rebel Alliance, which at that time was still in its younger years and were still in rocky relationships. In an effort to take down Darth Vader and the Empire, the Rebel Alliance taps Jyn Erso to track down and persuade her father to return to the Alliance after being taken away by the Empire years ago, forcing him to work on a planet killer, a weapon that was eventually revealed as the Death Star.

But the Alliance, not that formidable yet, had other people giving orders intended for the greater good of the universe. When Jyn finds out from her father what the Death Star was capable of doing and how it could be stopped, she sets out to find the loophole in the said weapon. Without the blessing of the Alliance, Jyn and her group that consists of Cassian Andor, Chirrut Imwe, the android K-2SO, Bodhi Rock, and Baze Malbus, went rogue and put their lives on the line to broadcast to the universe essential information about the Death Star and how it could be destroyed.

With an original story as simple as that, viewers could relate to the difficulties of the characters and delve deeply into the story, understanding how things mostly panned out in the “Star Wars” universe with Darth Vader finally making the Death Star. It introduced characters that viewers grew fond of and were saddened that their ultimate demise would end up as nameless heroes. Aside from the simple story, the movie was enhanced with the usual Hollywood aspect of simultaneous explosive action scenes occurring in different parts of the universes with various characters.

“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” truly did not disappoint after having fans wait for a year for it to be released. The said movie has already grossed a total of $290.5 million in the box office against a $200 million production budget. Movie-goers are not intimidated to watch “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” as they only need to enjoy it, whether or not they are a fan of “Star Wars”.
