2014 Cadillac CTS Gets New Twin-Turbo V6 Engine

Cadillac has revealed a new engine for its 2014 CTS sedan.

Made by GM, the engine is a 3.6-liter twin-turbo V-6 that produces 420 hp and 430 pound-foot of torque. The engine will go from zero to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds.

It will also be the first twin-turbo engine for Cadillac and the first to go with an eight-speed automatic transmission. According to GM, 90 percent of the engine's peak torque is available from 2500 RPM up to 5500 RPM. A combination of a smaller pair of turbochargers with an efficient charge air cooler serves for a reduction in turbo lag and helps provide immediate power delivery. With the engine, Cadillac's 2014 CTS sedan will be able to reach a top speed of 170 mph. It will get 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway.

Those looking for something else to power their CTS will also be able to choose from two other options. The first is a 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine that will make 272 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The other is a 3.6-liter V-6 that will make 321 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque. Both will come with a six-speed automatic transmission and feature either rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive.

Cadillac's choice of not going with a V-8 for its top engine marks a departure from vehicles like the Mercedes E550 and BMW 55oi. On the other hand, vehicles like the Audi A6 and Lexus GS do not sport the V-8. GM has confirmed that the engine will also become available later this year in the front-wheel-drive XTS, which should make for a significant improvement in that vehicle. Still rumored is that a similar version of the engine will appear in the compact ATS sedan as the ATS-V. The ATS-V would be a high-performance rival to the likes of the BMW M3 and Mercedes-Benz C63.

The 2014 CTS Sedan will be unveiled at the New York Auto Show. Competition will include the Jeep Cherokee, Range Rover Sport and Toyota Highlander.
