Flat-faced Cats And Dogs: Vet Cautions Pet Lovers From Unhealthy Breeds

Flat-faced cats and dogs are becoming quite popular and during the holidays, pets are selling like hotcakes as more and more people think that furry creatures make the best presents. Amidst the holiday cheer, one vet warns pet owners to stop buying pets with flat faces such as pugs and Boston terriers.

Flat-faced Cats and Dogs

Given the current demand for breeds with a flat face, breeders will continue to produce cats and dogs with traits that are in demand even if it leads to the birth of deformed animals. Animals with these characteristics often suffer from airway constriction which could lead to suffocation and difficulty eating, and eye problems.

The International Cat Care already made their opinion known about the issue of breeding deformed animals. Some countries like Switzerland already implemented laws to prosecute breeders who intentionally combine traits even if it can compromise the health of the resulting offspring.

Pet As Gifts

Current trends suggest that more and more people love giving pets as a Christmas gift. This is one reason why sales for trendy breeds increase during the holidays. With so many pet lovers clamoring for a cute Pomeranian, pug or a Persian cat, it is vital to think thrice before making any decision as emphasized in Journal Now.

Flat-faced cats and dogs are not the only ones that are affected by the issue of disreputable breeding. As noted by Cat Henstridge, a veterinary surgeon, in Daily Mail, the celebrity trend for owning small teacup dogs is one reason for the increase in irresponsible breeding.

While pets make great gifts, many vets warn against this practice since the chaos during the holidays is one of the worst environments for a new pet. It would be better to wait until after the Christmas season to get someone a new pet. Animal cruelty is not just about beating animals, it also involves breeding flat-faced cats and dogs and tiny pet breeds that lead to the birth of animals with numerous health issues.
