Nintendo Might Launch 'SNES Classic Edition' To Support 'NES Mini'

Up until now, the NES Classic Edition is still riding on a wave of popularity (it's still out of stock as of the moment), but Nintendo might be preparing for yet another round of console nostalgia. A Twitter account that keeps a close eye on trademark filings has caught Nintendo trademarking an image of a Super Nintendo controller.

Though this-this could be nothing, it could also potentially be the first glimpse of next Christmas's popular must-have console.

Will it be a SNES Classic Edition console?

A SNES Classic Edition would definitely make all kinds of sense for Nintendo. In terms of hardware, the current NES Classic Edition is just a basic board inside retro packaging with a bunch of classic pre-loaded games. Turning that into a SNES Classic Edition would mostly just comprise of writing different emulator software, as well as pre-loading different games.

Additionally, a different controller as well - which might be what most people are seeing here.

Why it makes sense for Nintendo

There really isn't any need to question just "why would Nintendo want to re-release yet another retro game console?" The current NES Classic Edition has been sold out in just minutes after its official launch, and it would definitely be naïve of Nintendo to not see the opportunities here.

The Classic Edition is meant to retail at only $60, but since its demand, the console is currently on sale on eBay for up to $300. Releasing the SNES Classic Edition would give people another console to covet, but would also allow Nintendo to sneak the price up a bit if it wanted to.

All remains to be seen

With all things said, it's good to keep in mind that this is just pure speculation as for now, and could be nothing more than Nintendo making strides to protect its intellectual property from potential rip-offs. But Nintendo fans are surely hoping that it would be something more.
