Nexus 4: How To Update To Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean With RootBox ROM 3.9.1 (Install Guide)

Hey there, Nexus 4 users — have we got a treat for you. Maybe a Jelly Bean treat ... a 4.2.2 Jelly Bean treat, even. An XDA developer who goes by the handle bajee11 has released RootBox ROM v3.9.1. The custom ROM is based on none other than Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and allows Nexus 4 users to update to the latest and greatest Android flavor while also retaining the functionality of AOKP and CyanogenMod.

For those of you who used RootBox ROM v3.8 only to be subjected to random reboots and memory leakage, rest assured: the developer claims these issues have all been resolved with RootBox ROM v3.9.1.

In addition to the bug fixes, RootBox v3.9.1 also adds support for a number of new Android devices, including the Samsung Galaxy S3.

We're sure you can hardly contain yourself at this point, so without further ado, here is the update guide for Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean:

Preparations

One does not simply update a Nexus 4.

If your Nexus 4 did not come factory unlocked, this guide is not for you. If your factory unlocked Nexus 4 is not rooted with ClockworkMod (CWM) installed, this guide is not for you.

First, ensure that your USB drivers for Nexus 4 are up to date. Next, make sure USB Debugging mode is enabled by navigating to Menu -> Settings -> Applications and select Development.

Backup your device and charge it to at least 80 percent before proceeding.

Step 1) Download the Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean RootBox ROM v.3.9.1 for Nexus 4. The file is available here.

Step 2) Download the Google Apps package here.

Step 3) Copy the files from Steps 1-2 to the SD card, then disconnect the USB cable and turn your device off.

Step 4) Put the phone into Recovery Mode by booting it up in bootloader mode, then navigating to Recovery Mode using the Volume keys. Select Recovery Mode using the power button.

Step 5) Perform a Nandroid backup of your existing ROM so you can restore in case something goes wrong or you simply want to revert. To do this, select Backup and Restore, then Backup on the following screen. Once completed, return to the recovery menu.

Step 6) Wipe your device by selecting "wipe data/factory reset" and then pressing "Yes." Do nothing until the data wipe completes. This could take a few minutes.

Step 7) From the CWM Recovery main menu, choose "wipe cache partition."

Step 8) Under the advanced options, select "Wipe Dalvik Cache."

Step 9) From the Recovery menu, press "install zip from sdcard," then select "choose zip from sdcard." Navigate to the RootBox Jelly Bean ROM and push the power key to confirm your selection. This will begin the installation. Do nothing until it completes.

Step 10) Repeat steps 3-9 to installed Google Apps.

Step 11) Navigate to the main Recovery menu and select "reboot system now." Your device will take about five minutes to start up the first time. Once it boots, your phone will be running Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. Kudos.
