PS4 'Not A Successor' To PS3, 'Addition To The Family' Instead

PS4 speculators may be surprised to find out that Sony does not consider the new console to be a replacement for the PS3.

Sony’s Middle East General Manager Robert Fisser said that the new console is “not a successor” to the current gen PS3.

"PS4, an addition to the PS family, like PSP and PS Vita, will offer a completely new gaming experience," Fisser said.

Could this mean players will not be selling their PS3s after all?

Fisser confirmed that the PS4 will be released in at least one region of the world in the upcoming holiday season. While that seems vague, Sony has already stated that the console would hit shelves in the U.S. by the end of 2013, coming out in the holiday season.

As for other regions, Now Gamer points out that Sony has not had a simultaneous launch in the U.S. and Europe for any of its previous consoles. The PS3 launched on Nov. 17, 2006 in the U.S., and on March 23, 2007 in Europe, over four full months later.

The PS2 only saw a separation of about a month, hitting U.S. shelves on Oct. 25, 2000, and European shelves on Nov. 24, 2000. The PS4 is only the second next-gen console, after the Wii-U launched last November to mixed reviews.

Microsoft’s new console, the Xbox 720, has yet to be officially announced. But E3 is right around the corner. If any event gives us our first look at the PS4 and the Xbox 720, it will be there.

E3 2013 runs from June 11-13 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

As of now, some early PS4 titles are confirmed to be Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, Battlefield 4, Infamous: Second Son, Killzone: Shadow Fall and Watch Dogs.

While little else is known about the PS4, Sony has revealed what the Dualshock 4 will look like, as well as the next Playstation Move controller. We also know that the PS4 plans to use the Playstation Vita as a companion device, meaning that certain games, if not all, will be able to be played remotely.
