Best Cydia Apps: TetherMe vs. MyWi (Review)

One of the best arguments for jailbreaking an iPhone, especially if you have a grandfathered unlimited data plan, is that it enables you to tether your data connection to other devices. On AT&T for instance, an additional $20/month fee is charged just for the privilege of connecting your existing data pool to a laptop or Roku player. Unlimited data tethering is not available at any price and the tiered data plans are around $10 monthly per gigabyte.

If you jailbreak your iPhone, at the very least you can always avoid the $20/month tethering fee via a Cydia app. If you jailbreak your iPhone 5 with 4G LTE and have an unlimited data plan, you may be able to avoid ever having to pay for broadband Internet again.

Best Cydia Apps: MyWi

MyWi is probably one of the best and most robust tethering jailbreak apps on the Cydia store, but it's also probably the most expensive at $19.99. MyWi sports a gorgeous UI and has the benefit of data metrics so you can keep track of how much you use. This is helpful even for AT&T subscribers with unlimited data plans because once you use enough data, the carrier will began throttling your connection down to 2G speeds.

MyWi comes with a three-day trial, so head over to the Cydia store to give it a whirl.

Best Cydia Apps: TetherMe

TetherMe is way more basic than MyWi and if you're into minimalism, you might prefer to go this route. It's also free. The biggest advantage to TetherMe is that there seems to be anecdotal evidence that it does a more thorough job of masking the nature of your data connection from AT&T.

If AT&T becomes aware that you're circumventing their tethering policy via a jailbreak app, you'll usually get a warning phone call before the carrier automatically tacks on the $20/month tethering fee. For unlimited data subscribers, it also means the end of your grandfathered data plan.

TetherMe says it does what it can to make it appear as if data usage is coming directly from your iPhone, but warns that it's impossible to hide everything.
