Qualcomm WiPower Offers Wireless Charging, Pad-Free

Qualcomm is driving innovation forward by offering wireless charging using Qualcomm's signature "WiPower Technology." This new platform makes charging easier and doesn't require being placed directly on a charging pad.

Qualcomm aims to simplify the way we charge portable devices such as phones and tablets. Without having to place the device precisely on a charging area, WiPower, developed by Qualcomm, uses inductive wireless energy transfer.

Other wireless power devices require direct contact between the device and the charging surface.

"This would mean retail establishments wanting to add wireless power need to either install new furniture with the technology pre-installed, or physically alter existing furniture, which can be both costly and messy," Senior Manager, Product Marketing at Qualcomm Geoff Gordon said in a blog entry.

Qualcomm's WiPower was designed for third-party developers to make compatible products, such as tables and counters, that offer wireless charging specs. Multiple devices can be charged at once when placed on or near a charging surface. WiPower technology allows for the power to transfer through other materials: wood, for example.

WiPower charging stations can be installed easily into furniture, affixed underneath a wooden table, for example. The device would be able to be charged by placing it right on the table, since the energy permeates through the wood.

With this innovative technology, we could see this sort of technology integrated into furniture everywhere. WiPower would eliminate the need for people to carry extra phone batteries, wall chargers and power strips. Don't be surprised if you see this technology used in cafes, restaurants and universities soon.
