Microsoft Office Web Apps Moving Forward: What To Expect

Microsoft might be suffering a fair share of troubles of late, what with Nokia possibly switching to Android for future Lumia phones, Bill Gates himself having to come back into the game to tout the super-expensive Microsoft Surface Pro and that whole "confusing customers" issue. But one thing is for sure: that it's still pretty hard to beat Microsoft Office for document creation.

Along with the rest of the Microsoft Office component of the company, the Web Apps team (or Web Applications Companion or "WAC") is working to roll out more new updates more regularly.

Features that we can expect coming soon for Microsoft Office Web Apps, as announced by an internal blog, include the likes of official Chrome support on Android tablets and real-time co-authoring (as opposed to "same-time" co-authoring) for products starting with PowerPoint Web App.

According to ZDNet, Yammer will also be integrated into Microsoft Office Web Apps, as well, namely aligning with editing/coediting of Word, PowerPoint and Excel.

"Gemini 1" is the codename for the new wave of Microsoft Office Web App updates, ZDNet says, with this particular wave hitting the Net some time around October 2013.

This means the Microsoft Office Web Apps updates will likely be out around the same time as Windows Blue 8.1.

"Another set of updates to Office Web Apps will hit a year later, around October 2014 (Gemini 2)," ZDNet says.

"The Gemini 1 wave will include new Metro-Style/Windows Store versions of Word, Excel, OneNote and PowerPoint," ZDNet continues, "in addition to some of the Office Web Apps. Microsoft officials are not commenting on anything having to do with Gemini."
