'Dead Space' Reboot to Release in 2023: Here's What You Need to Know

The "Dead Space" Remake may be more immersive or realistic than the original game.

Electronic Arts' (EA) Canadian studio, EA Motive, recently livestreamed another developer update detailing many new features and improvements on the upcoming "Dead Space" remake.

One of these features is the ALIVE system.

Details on the ALIVE System

The Adrenaline, Limbic System Response, Intelligent Dialog, Vitals, and Exertions system, or ALIVE, is a new feature on the "Dead Space" remake. This feature encompasses all components of Isaac's breathing, heart rate, vocal excursions, and dialogue influenced by a variety of gameplay features, per EA Motive's livestream

Isaac, or Isaac Clarke, will be returning as the main character of the "Dead Space" remake.

EA Motive developed the new system to complement the game's audio effects as the company wants to simulate the human limbic system.

According to the University of Queensland, Australia, the limbic system is the part of the brain involved in humans' behavioral and emotional responses, especially when it comes to behaviors we need for survival.

Terry Calico, the Senior VO Designer at EA Motive, likened the new ALIVE system with the human body's response while watching a horror movie or game. He mentioned that the limbic system triggers the release of adrenaline into the body and causes physical responses like increased heart rate when we consume these types of media.

Calico added that the adrenaline from the remake comes from external factors that have a direct influence on Isaac's heart rate. These external factors include combat difficulty value, Isaac's fatigue level, scripted events, and jump scares.

"We want Isaac to reflect how anyone would physically react in the scenario he's placed in," Calico said.

Calico did not mention if the ALIVE system would directly affect the remake's gameplay in any way.

According to an IGN report, the most interesting part of this system is the Intelligent Dialog part, where Isaac's scripted dialogue changes based on his current state.

Isaac's scripted dialogue has three variations: normal, fatigued, and injured. While normal gives you the usual dialogue, fatigued will make Isaac's scripted dialogue will actually sound like he's tired. Meanwhile, Isaac will grunt and ache during his dialogue when he's injured, per ComicBook.com.

EA Motive also added audio occlusion to the remake, providing players with an "unparalleled audio experience" by creating a sense of realistic audio projection.

Audio occlusion occurs when an object in a game completely blocks the space between the source of a sound and its listener, according to an Audio Kinetic report.

'Dead Space' Remake Release Date

Finally, EA Motive mentioned on its livestream that the remake of "Dead Space" is slated to be launched in 2023 to allow the developers to polish the game in a way that meets fans' expectations.

Although the company mentioned it has a specific date in mind, EA Motive did not disclose it due to the game currently being in early alpha.
