Avalanche Software recently revealed a gameplay trailer for its upcoming open-world Harry Potter RPG, Hogwarts Legacy, ahead of its release date later this year.
The game developer revealed the trailer during Sony's semi-regular digital event, State of Play.
Hogwarts Legacy Gameplay Trailer Details
According to the gameplay trailer and the game's FAQ page, Hogwarts Legacy's story has players explore the world of wizards and witches as they go on an adventure to uncover a hidden truth of the wizarding world.
Although the team of Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling is involved in creating the game's story to have the game's story stay true to Rowling's vision, it is not a story from Rowling, nor is it a direct adaptation of the books and films.
Players can customize their characters at the beginning of the game and choose which of Hogwart's four houses to join. From there, players will attend classes within the wizarding school, including charms, defense against the dark arts, herbology, and potion-making.
As mentioned in a previous iTech Post article, the game takes place in the 1800s, centuries before the events of J.K. Rowling's books take place. As such, players won't be meeting Harry, Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ronald Weasley in the game.
However, just like the iconic trio, players can forge a bond with their schoolmates to become companions that will join them in their adventures. The player can then expand their abilities and learn more about them as the game progresses. However, the gameplay trailer and the FAQ page didn't mention if it is possible to romance your companions a la Dragon Age or Mass Effect.
Players can also explore the wizarding school in all its entirety. Aside from attending classes, players can discover dungeons, secret passageways, and challenging puzzles within the castle's walls. It is also implied in the game's promotional artwork that players can go to wand shops to acquire wands, gear, and supplies, like in Ollivanders.

Players can level up their character by attending classes, completing challenges, and upgrading talents and skills to aid their progression. Magical gear, such as wands, can be upgraded and specialized, increasing their offensive and defensive capabilities depending on the player's preferences. They can also mix and match spells based on how they want to play the game. For this, the school's Room of Requirement is needed to customize and grow the player's abilities.
Taming and riding on magical beasts like hippogriffs is also possible in-game. However, brooms are also provided as an alternative mode of transportation to cater to players' role-playing needs.
Regarding role-playing, players will find that the game has a morality system similar to Red Dead Redemption 2's. However, it isn't clear if players' choices would affect the wizarding world just like they do in the Dishonored games.
Hogwarts Legacy Pricing and Release Date
Avalanche Software's Hogwarts Legacy is expected to be released for current-gen and last-gen gaming consoles as well as PC in 2022's holiday season.
The developer has yet to give information about the game's pricing or a specific release date apart from what was previously covered.
