Moto X: Leaked carrier video reveals Contextually Aware, Active Update features, release date and more (Video)

The upcoming Moto X has leaked in a new video from Rogers Canada, giving a glipse into what to expect from the new Motorola smartphone.

The video shows how the Moto X will handle voice and gesture controls while the phone is turned off, boasts the phone's Active Update feature and mentions an imminent release date: August.

The Moto X has been making rounds in the last few weeks with details leaking about what we can expect in Motorola's 'hero phone' of 2013. The smartphone has already been seen in public being used by Google Chairman, Eric Schmidt. The Moto X will be the first device that Google and Motorola have worked on together since Google acquired the company.

When Motorola CEO, Dennis Woodside confirmed the Moto X at AllThingsD in May, he told the audience that the smartphone would be contextually aware. It would adapt to situations and perform actions without any input from the user. A new leaked video from Rogers gives us a demo on how the smartphone will handle voice commands, how its Active Updates feature will bring something new to the table, how different gestures will activate features, some close-up shots of the smartphone, and more.

The Moto X will have sensors that will give it a continuous listening mode. A user does not need to turn on the device to perform different functions. Instead, users will only need to say a phrase out loud. The video shows a woman saying, "OK, Google Now" with the device turned off. The smartphone wakes when it hears her voice uttering the magic words, and thw woman performs a voice search through Google Now.

The Active Update feature is also demonstrated for the first time and shows how the Moto X will handle notifications. Instead of using blinking lights for notifications, Motorola's Active Update feature displays notifications on the smartphone's screen with a blinking icon of the app that is pushing the notification. The video also shows how users can activate functions on the Moto X with a gesture. We see the woman twist her wrist twice while holding the device and the smartphone automatically launches the camera application.

The video ends with the woman telling users that the Moto X will be offered exclusively on Rogers in Canada in August and will be available in a choice of black or white. All four major carriers in the U.S. are also expected to carry the Moto X when it launches.
