Netflix Releases Teaser for Guillermo del Toro’s 'Cabinet of Curiosities'

In line with Netflix Geeked Week, Netflix has dropped the first trailer for Guillermo del Toro's new horror anthology series, "Cabinet of Curiosities." With the all-star creative teams and actors, the series will tell a variety of scary stories, which will all be overseen by del Toro.

Trailer Teases Directors and Actors

Although the trailer doesn't include too much information or footage of the stories to be featured, but it does give hints on all of the talent involved in the series. 

Jennifer Kent ("The Babadook"), David Prior ("The Empty Man"), Catherine Hardwicke ("Twilight"), and Ana Lily Amirpour ("A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night") are some of the directors included.

According to Polygon, along with all these directors, the series will also star Essie Davis ("The Babadook"), Andrew Lincoln ("The Walking Dead"), F. Murray Abraham ("Mythic Quest"), Tim Blake Nelson ("Watchmen"), Crispin Glover, Peter Weller ("Robocop"), Rupert Grint ("Harry Potter"), and even more.

Additional episode directors include Ana Lily Amirpour, Catherine Hardwicke, Guillermo Navarro, David Prior and Keith Thomas, and writers include Haley Z. Boston, Regina Corrado, David S. Goyer, Lee Patterson, Aaron Stewart-Ahn and Mika Watkins.

Moreover, according to the Deadline, Panos Cosmatos, Jennifer Kent and Vincenzo Natali write and direct single episodes of the series, which was retitled from "Guillermo del Toro Presents 10 After Midnight."

According to Netflix, the "Cabinet of Curiosities" is meant to challenge our traditional notions of horror. The collection of scary stories featured from macabre to magical, gothic to grotesque or classically creepy.

Eight sinister tales, including two original works by del Toro, are brought to life by a team of writers and directors personally chosen by the "Shape of Water" filmmaker, as per the Deadline.

Guillermo del Toro created and executive produced the "Cabinet of Curiosities." It is executive produced by Oscar winner J. Miles Dale ("The Shape of Water"), who also serves as co-showrunner, and Gary Ungar. Meanwhile, Regina Corrado serves as co-EP.

"Cabinet of Curiosities" will include eight episodes in its first season, however, the series does not have a release date just yet.

Who is Guillermo del Toro?

Guillermo del Toro Gómez is a Mexican film director, producer, screenwriter, and author. He is best known for his Academy Award-winning fantasy films "Pan's Labyrinth" (2006) where he won winning the Oscars for Best Director, and "The Shape of Water" (2017), which won Best Picture.

Throughout his career, del Toro has shifted between personal, lower-budget Spanish language films, such as "Cronos" (1993) and "The Devil's Backbone" (2001), and Hollywood tentpoles.

As a producer or writer, he worked on the films "The Orphanage" (2007), "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" (2010), "The Hobbit" film series (2012-14), "Mama" (2013), "The Book of Life" (2014), "Pacific Rim: Uprising" (2018), "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" (2019), and "The Witches" (2020).

Characterized by a strong connection to fairy tales and horror, Del Toro's work has been observed with an effort to infuse visual or poetic beauty in the grotesque.

Del Toro has had a lifelong fascination with monsters. Moreover, he is also known for his use of insectile and religious imagery, the themes of Catholicism and celebrating imperfection, underworld and clockwork motifs, practical special effects, and dominant amber lighting.
