Netflix Releases Full-Length Trailer for 'Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

A new trailer for Netflix's Cyberpunk 2077 spin-off anime is here, and boy does it dazzle.

The popular streaming service recently revealed a full-length trailer for its upcoming anime series, "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners," which gives audiences a good look at what to expect from the anime series.

Despite the trailer's release, Netflix has yet to give a definite release date for its Cyberpunk 2077 spin-off anime still. However, it is expected to be out sometime in September, per Gizmodo.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Full-Length Trailer Details

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners' new full-length trailer features new characters and a storyline separate from Cyberpunk 2077. According to Netflix's statement, the anime series will follow the story of David, a street kid making his way through Night City's urban environment already riddled with techno warfare and body modifications.

To survive in Night City, he joins a group of mercenaries known as edgerunners, who also go by another name: cyberpunks.

A behind-the-scenes look at the show from its animators at Japan-based animation studio, Studio Trigger, gives more light on the anime's storyline. Masahiko Otsuka, the company's co-founder, describes the anime as a show with a dystopic world where gangs go head to head against "corpos," with the anime featuring "strong themes" of social inequality and violence, per a video from Netflix Anime.

The anime, if the trailer has anything to come by, can only be described as "brutal, over the top, and gorgeously animated. The trailer even gave audiences a taste of the action that is to come in the anime with a "Matrix Reloaded"- like bike chase.

The anime's animation and design came from the editing skills of Studio Trigger, the company behind some of anime's greatest series like "Gurren Lagann" and "Kill la Kill."

The studio is helmed by "Gurren Lagann's" creator, Hiroyuki Imaishi, who will also direct the series along with assistant director Masahiko Otsuka, per the official Cyberpunk 2077 website.

Imaishi will also be joined by creative director Hiromi Wakabayashi, character designers Yoh Yoshinari, and Yuto Kaneko. Yoshiki Usa and Masahiko Otsuka will be responsible for the anime's adapted screenplay.

Furthermore, the anime's original score will be composed by Akira Yamaoka, who is best known for his work on the Silent Hill series, per his IMDb page.

In addition to the anime's direction, it will also feature an all-Japanese cast that includes KENN, Aoi Yuuki, Hiroki Tochi, Michiko Kaiden, Takako Honda, Wataru Takagi, Tomoyo Kurosawa, Kazuhiko Inoue, Yurika Hino, and Kenjiro Tsuda.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Background And Release Date

The first season of "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners" will have ten episodes at a 30-minute runtime, but it is unknown when the anime can be streamed online. However, it is reported that the anime will be available on Netflix sometime in September.

The anime is co-produced by Studio Trigger and Poland-based CD Projekt Red, the company that developed Cyberpunk 2077, the game that "Edgerunners" was based on.

The anime was first announced in June 2020 and was expected to be streamable sometime in 2022 at that time, per Kotaku.
