Netflix's Most Expensive Film (So Far)

Netflix spent $200 million on "The Gray Man," the most expensive movie the streaming platform has ever produced, in an effort to increase its hits total in order to compete with rivals.

The streaming platform is probably counting on the film's success to rebound after its "not-so-promising" second quarter, according to TechCrunch.

Meanwhile, due to positive reviews, the action film starring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans, which appears to be inspired by "John Wick," will receive its very own sequel and spin-off under Netflix.

'The Gray Man' Sequel and a Spin-Off

Gosling, the protagonist, and the directors Joe and Anthony Russo are all returning for the sequel. However, when the sequel is anticipated to release was not yet revealed by Netflix.

Meanwhile, the writers of Zombieland and Deadpool, Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, are also working on 'The Gray Man' spin-off. While Netflix has not revealed any specifics as of yet, it has stated that the film would examine a new part of "The Gray Man" universe, as per Engadget.

Viewers' Feedback on 'The Gray Man'

Engadget mentioned that the film received mostly mixed reviews from critics, yet it seems to be a hit with audiences. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a 91% audience approval rating. When it debuted on Netflix last Friday, it was the top film in 92 different countries. According to Netflix, 88.55 million hours of the movie have been viewed by users as of Sunday.

The news outlet also said that the streaming service is hopeful that the new film will grow into a huge spy franchise that both new and devoted users would want to watch because its previous performance has been poor. Netflix is still under pressure to perform, despite recently losing 970,000 users.

We'll have to wait and see if that seeming success of "The Gray Man" actually contributes to Netflix keeping and acquiring new subscribers.

This Is Not the Streamer's First Foray Into a Big Movie Franchise

TechCrunch said that Netflix also decided to produce sequels and spinoffs for Zack Synder's "Army of the Dead" and spent $450 million on the rights to "Knives Out 2" and "Knives Out 3."

Meanwhile, the fifth season and spin-off of "Stranger Things" were officially announced last month. Additionally, Netflix's original show "Squid Game" will return for a second season as well.
