A Wearable Insulin Pump for Type 1 Diabetes Patients Has Been Made Available in Drug Stores Across the US

A medical company has plugged the market gap for wearable insulin pumps.

Insulet Corporation has recently announced that its Omnipod 5 tubeless Automated Insulin Delivery (AID) System, made for people with Type 1 diabetes, is now available across the US, per Health Insider.

Insulet Corporation is a Massachusetts-based medical company specializing in tubeless insulin pump technology, per the company's Index page.

Insulet Corporation mentioned that its Omnipod 5 is now widely available through retail pharmacies across the US, providing those with Type 1 Diabetes with easier access to the device.

Insulet Corporation claims that the Omnipod 5 is the first and only tubeless, automated insulin delivery system in the world. It is an insulin delivery system that can easily integrate with the Dexcom G6 Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) system, per the device's official website.

Keep in mind that the Dexcom G6 CGM system is sold separately and is not packaged with Insulet Corporation's Omnipod 5.

It also automatically adjusts its wearer's insulin delivery every five minutes through the company's SmartAdjust technology, which means multiple daily injections, tubes, or fingersticks are no longer needed.

As previously mentioned, the device is a perfect fit for those with type 1 diabetes, including two-year-old babies.

With the device coming with a companion app, the wearer doesn't have to interact with the device itself to see their glucose levels. The companion app will show their glucose levels and insulin dosing, as well as the option of manually controlling the device.

The companion app also has an "Activity feature" which, when used, directs the Omnipod 5 to reduce insulin delivery when glucose typically goes low, like when exercising.

People whose phones are not compatible with the Omnipod 5's companion app can get the Omnipod 5 Controller for free with the first prescription for the Omnipod 5 Intro Kit.

In addition to the companion app, the Omnipod 5 comes with a water-resistant tubeless insulin Pod that can be worn at any body part the wearer wants insulin. This Pod lets the wearer trade multiple daily injections for up to three days of continuous insulin delivery.

The Pod has an IP28 rating, meaning that it is only water resistant for up to 25 feet for an hour.

The Omnipod 5 also has a SmartBolus calculator that automatically incorporates the wearer's CGM data and trends.

Advantages Of The Omnipod 5

The Omnipod 5 is better than the typical insulin pump because of its various features. The Pod can be attached to any part of the wearer's body, allowing a direct supply of insulin anytime, anywhere.

The typical insulin pump, however, is attached to an article of clothing (preferably pants or shorts) the patient is wearing. This flaw makes the Omnipod 5 the more portable of the two.

In addition to these, the Omnipod 5 is also water resistant for up to 25 meters for an hour, allowing those with Type 1 diabetes to enjoy water sports like swimming.

Thanks to Insulet Corporation making the Omnipod 5 more available through retail pharmacies, it is now a device that cen be easily accessed by anyone with type 1 diabetes compared to those available through the DME channel.
