Sony is Now Selling a Lighter PlayStation 5 Model

Despite retailers' assertions that it wouldn't be available until September, a new PlayStation 5 model, the CFI-1200A/B digital/disc, with a reduced mass, is now available, and Australian customers already own a unit.

Here's What We Know So Far About the New PlayStation 5 Models

According to a report released by the Press Start (via Engadget), retailers of Sony's PlayStation 5 said that a brand new model known as CFI-1200A/B digital/disc is now available. This version is lightweight, thus, it would be easy to be produced; however, it does not come with significant upgrades.

Although several retailers have said that the version of the console will be available on September 15, Australian customers already have their hands on it.

When put into comparison based on what is stated in their manuals, Press Start notes that the CFI-1202B (Digital console), which weighs 3.4 kilograms, is 500 grams lighter than the originally released digital PS5. At the same time, compared to its initial version, the CFI-1202A (Disc console) is 600 grams lighter, having a mass of 3.9 kilograms.

Engadget said that the weight reduction in both models could enable a decline in production cost while increasing the speed of its production. However, it is undetermined whether adjustments in its case's design or its internal components were made so the new versions would be lighter.

In 2021, the model CFI-1102 also had a weight change as the size of its heatsink was lowered. With this being said, there is a possibility that the new models would have a similar case again. Until no one has yet ripped down a console, the distinction between the initial and current versions remains a question.

Sony's release of the CFI-1200A/B digital/disc comes after it announced a price hike in PlayStation 5 in the UK, Europe, Japan, China, Australia, Mexico, and Canada. According to the business, the 50 USD raise is due to the plights of economic challenges.

Sony Increased Playstation 5's Price in Its International Markets

Sony suggested a retail price for its PlayStation 5 game consoles last August 25, to be made effective immediately in its international markets except for Japan which will only face a price increase on September 15. However, this unfortunate announcement will not affect US consumers.

Listed below are the price changes in certain countries.

Europe: A 50 euro ($50) rise brings the disc version's price to 549.99 euros and the digital version's price to 449.99 euros.
UK: The disc version's price has risen by $30 to £479.99, while the digital version's to £399.99.
Japan: A 5000 yen ($36.16) rise brings the disc version's price to 54,980 yen ($397.67) and the digital version's price to 44,980 yen ($325.34).
China: A 400 yuan ($724.66) rise brings the disc version's price to 4,299 yuan ($623.06) and the digital version's price to 3,499 yuan ($507.12).
Australia: The disc edition now costs 799.95 Australian dollars ($554.34), and the digital version now for 649.95 Australian dollars ($450.40)has increased by 50 Australian dollars ($34.65).
Mexico: The disc edition is now priced at 14,999 pesos ($751.25), and the digital version is priced at 12,499 pesos ($626.30).
Canada: The price of the disc and digital versions has increased by 20 Canadian dollars ($15.27).

According to the business, it has chosen to increase the price of its flagship console in light of the challenging economic climate. Its price increase came simultaneously when gaming companies like Nintendo and Microsoft saw their earnings fall in the second quarter.
