Walmart Now Lets You Be Your Own Model With Its Improved Virtual Try-On Technology

Walmart is revolutionizing the way people shop for clothes online.

The popular multinational retail corporation has recently introduced its new "Be Your Own Model" experience that allows people to use a picture of themselves to try out clothes online.

Walmart online shoppers who wish to try out its new way of trying out clothes can do so now with their iOS devices, with the experience becoming available to Andriod in the coming weeks.

Walmart mentioned in its announcement that it is leveling up its online shopping experience with its new Be Your Own Model experience, an improved version of the "Choose My Model" experience it released earlier in March.

Both experiences were made possible by Walmart's acquisition of virtual fitting room platform Zeekit and its virtual try-on technology, which combines fashion and technology to create a "significantly enhanced customer and social experience."

While Walmart's Choose My Model experience allows online shoppers to select from 50 available models of various heights and sizes and use them to see how the clothes they wish to buy look on them, the company's Be Your Own Model takes it a step further.

According to Walmart, the new experience providers online shoppers with the opportunity to use a photo of themselves to try out the clothes they wish to buy, giving them a better way to visualize how the item will look on themselves.

The experience does more than superimpose the clothing of a customer's choice unto a photo of themselves, such as AR-enabled shopping, according to Walmart SVP of New Businesses and Emerging Tech Cheryl Ainoa, per her interview with Tech Crunch.

Walmart's try-on technology provides an "ultra-realistic simulation" complete with shadows, fabric draping, and where clothing falls off the customer's figure in seconds.

According to CNBC, the algorithm and machine learning technology Walmart uses for its try-on technology was previously used to create more accurate topographic maps, allowing Walmart to achieve that "ultra-realistic" quality.

This experience is now available to use with more than 270,000 items in Walmart's inventory, which includes its "exclusive, elevated brands and private brands" such as Free Assembly, Scoop, Sofia Jeans, Love & Sports, and many more.

Select items from some of Walmart's national brands and Walmart marketplace also feature Walmart's new experience.

Online shoppers who choose to try out the new experience have to look out for the "Try It On" button on the page of the item they choose to wear while browsing Walmart's app on their mobile devices.

Once that's done, customers will have to choose between the Be Your Own Model experience or the Choose My Model experience. Choosing the former will prompt the customer to take a picture of themselves within the Walmart app.

Once a picture is taken, Walmart's app will use algorithms and machine learning technology to scan the customer's body, allowing them to view the item they want to try out on themselves with "ultra-realistic" results.

The customer can also use the picture they took to try out other items each time they choose the Be Your Own Model experience.

However, customers should keep in mind that the experience is only available for iOS devices at the publication of this article. Customers with android phones will have to wait for the coming weeks to try it out for themselves.
