Taylor Swift's 'Midnights' Album May Have Crashed Spotify on Its Release Day

Spotify crashed earlier today, but it's not because of a hack or a bug.

Users of the popular audio streaming platform had recently gone to social media to air out their frustrations of being unable to access Spotify when Taylor Swift's latest album was released.

Swift's "Midnights" album was set to be released for launch on Oct. 21 at 9 PM PST worldwide, per the Los Angeles Times.

Spotify Taylor Swift-Induced Crash Details

Fans of Taylor Swift that use Spotify mentioned in their respective social media accounts that they couldn't open Spotify for an unknown reason when Swift's latest album, "Midnights," was released.

According to a report from Bloomberg, these users have also gone to global monitoring service Downdetector to report their inability to open the app at that time, leading to 7,844 outages being reported worldwide by 1:10 AM EDT.

This number could mean that the number of people opening Spotify at the same time overwhelmed Spotify's servers, which led to the app crashing for people.

Interestingly, phrases about the release of Swift's "Midnights" album were trending globally on Twitter, with "Spotify" being the second trending word due to the volume of users airing out their frustration on the platform.

Fortunately, Spotify was able to rectify the problem just in time for people to enjoy some of Swift's new music tracks hours before the release of her album's first music video, "Anti-Hero," per We Got This Covered.

As of the writing of this article, Spotify is now accessible worldwide, and reports of outages have been scarce since 1:10 AM EDT.

Additionally, Spotify and Swift have yet to comment on the former's crash publicly. However, Swift took to her official Twitter account to thank her fans and supporters for her album's success. She also thanked Jack Antonoff and the other collaborators she worked with for their contributions to the album.

"Midnights is a collage of intensity, highs and lows and ebbs and flows," Swift tweeted. "Life can be dark, starry, cloudy, terrifying, electrifying, hot, cold, romantic or lonely. Just like Midnights. Which is out now."

Interestingly, this isn't the first time Spotify crashed due to a release of a Taylor Swift album. According to Newsweek, Spotify went down for the first time due to a Taylor Swift album when the pop artist released a re-recording of her 2012 album, "Red."

Just like today, Swifties and other Spotify users took to social media to air out their frustrations of being unable to open the app, with some congratulating Swift for the crash.

Some users have even went to the app's Community webpage to report the problem to Spotify, as evidenced by one of the post of one of its users.

Spotify eventually fixed the issue, though, and by the time Newsweek's article was published, the app became accessible again.
