Death Stranding Is Getting a Movie Adaptation — Is There a Release Date?

Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding is going to the big screen.

Kojima Productions has reportedly partnered with Hammerstone Studios to develop and produce a film adaptation of Kojima's hit action shooter game following his exit from Konami.

Kojima Productions released Death Stranding on Nov. 8, 2019, for current-gen and last-gen consoles at the time to critical success, per Metacritic.

Death Stranding Movie Adaptation Details

Details about Death Stranding's movie adaptation are limited as of press time, but according to Deadline's report, Hammerstone will fully finance it, while Kojima Productions US and Hammerstone owner Alex Lebovici will produce the film.

Additionally, Kojima Productions US and Allan Ungar will act as executive producers.

As for the movie's plot, it may remain true to how the original 2019 game went, but it will reportedly introduce new elements and characters within the Death Stranding universe, per IGN.

It is unknown if Death Stranding's star-studded cast will return to reprise their roles in the movie. You may remember that Norman Reedus of "The Walking Dead" fame, Mads Mikkelsen, and Léa Seydoux were just some of the well-known actors and actresses in the game.

Unfortunately, the movie doesn't have a writer and director yet, but it may very well soon have as both studios have put the assembly of a production crew on the fast track while development is underway.

The news came a few days after the 2022 Game Awards, where Kojima Productions announced the game's sequel, Death Stranding 2, to the public.

Kojima said he couldn't be more excited about the partnership he established with Hammerstone to take Death Stranding to the big screen, calling it a "pivotal moment" for the franchise.

Meanwhile, Lebovici said that he is "thrilled and honored" to get the chance to partner with Kojima to create a film adaptation of Death Stranding

Lebovici added that he plans to make the film into "something far more intimate and grounded" that will redefine what a video game adaptation could be.

"[Death Stranding's film adaptation] will be an authentic 'Hideo Kojima' production," Lebovici said.

Death Stranding Details

Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding is an action shooter game that focuses on the story of Sam Bridges as he travels across the ravaged wastelands of an apocalyptic version of Earth to discover the cause behind the supernatural phenomenon and save humanity from imminent extinction, per IMDb.

Kojima Productions released the game to critical success, though it isn't without its flaws. IGN said in its review that the game didn't consistently get the balance between realism and escapism, while The Verge called it bizarre and boring, but also breathtaking.

The game got a Metascore of 86 based on 54 critic reviews, while it got a user score of 7.8 based on 2,127 ratings.

Players said that the game's design surpasses expectations and that it is truly unique for good or ill. They also added that the game shows humanity's unrelenting, uncompromised vision of hope.
