Nintendo’s Long-Awaited Sports Story Is Now on the Switch

The long-awaited sequel to Nintendo's beloved sports RPG is now out for players to enjoy.

The popular Japanese game developer and publisher recently released Golf Story's sequel, Sports Story, on the Nintendo Switch as part of its "Inside the House of Indies" holiday event.

Nintendo's "Inside the House of Indies" event gives players a fresh-daily update filled with announcements and more from the company's indie partners.

Sports Story Release Details

Sports Story, much like its predecessor, is a sports RPG featuring various sports and sporting activities all connected using one big story, per the game's Nintendo Store page.

Players will find that the game features many of the same characters from Golf Story and that it follows the events of the previous game, per Engadget.

During the course of the game's plot, players, through their characters, will make either friends or foes, much like in Pokemon.

True to the game's name, it features sports more than just golf. Players can look forward to playing and mastering eight unique golf courses, and tennis matches all the way to the world tour, and even create their own soccer team.

Playing these sports and sporting activities will raise players' Sporting Rank. Doing so will unlock new various activities like BMX, mini-gold, cricket, volleyball, and fishing.

Not everything has to be about sports in a sports RPG, though. During players' downtimes in the game, they can visit the mall and enjoy many of its daily attractions, specialty sports stores, and mini-games.

As with Pokemon, players can explore dungeons, abandoned ruins, and the mysterious Wildlands by train, helicopter, and even a houseboat.

Four players can play the game on a single Nintendo Switch, provided they have another pair of controllers for the third and fourth players to use.

To accommodate this large amount of player support, players can play Sports Story on the Switch's Handheld Mode, Tabletop Mode, and TV Mode.

The game is also 799MB big - a welcome fact for Switch gamers trying to save up on internal storage space.

Nintendo 'Inside the House of Indies' Event

The game was supposed to be released sometime in 2020 but was delayed due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, Nintendo did give its word in November that Sports Story would indeed be released sometime this month, which the company delivered.

Nintendo's release of the game comes at the tail end of its "Inside the House of Indies" holiday event, which also saw the release of the RPG Mortal Shell: Complete EditionSonority, and Hyper Gunsport.

The game consists of five days' worth of content, with day five being on Dec. 24.

The event also contains updates on various games. According to the event's official webpage, a remake of Risk of Rain is in the works, while The Gecko Gods and Pupperazzi are coming to the Nintendo Switch sometime in 2023.
