Director Hideo Kojima Says Death Stranding Movie Adaptation Will Take a Direction Nobody Has Tried Before

The sci-fi video game Death Stranding is getting a film adaptation, and according to its director Hideo Kojima, the upcoming movie will be very different from other big-screen adaptations of video games, as per PC Gamer.

In an interview with IGN, Kojima said that the film adaptation of Death Stranding will take a direction nobody has tried before. He also revealed his intentions for the upcoming movie.

Kojima Productions, Alex Lebovici Will Produce Death Stranding Movie Adaptation

According to the Death Stranding director, the film adaptation of other games has failed because they cater to gamers, that's why they share the same kind of look as the games.

He said that with the Death Stranding movie adaptation, he's taking the approach and evolving world of the game in such a way that would suit the film well.

Death Stranding is created to be a game, and games are games, according to Kojima, adding that there's no need to turn them into films.

With that, he said that the upcoming film of the game will take a direction that nobody has ever tried before when it comes to a movie adaptation of a game.

The upcoming movie adaptation of the sci-fi game is being produced as a joint collaboration between Kojima Productions and Alex Lebovici, as per PC Gamer.

Lebovici is the executive producer of the recent horror film "Barbarian." According to Kojima, his decision to work with Lebovici was based on their shared vision for the film.

The director said that he does not intend to make a blockbuster film, but he's rather aiming for a more arthouse approach. He added that the only person who offered to make a film that he envisioned was Lebovici.

Hideo Kojima Says the Upcoming Death Stranding Movie Will Introduce New Elements

In 2019, the original Death Stranding game came out on PlayStation 4. Eventually, it was released on PlayStation 5 and PC.

The official movie was announced earlier this month when Kojima Productions revealed it was partnering with Hammerstone Studios, according to CBR.

According to Kojima, the upcoming movie would introduce new elements into the Death Stranding universe.

Aside from the upcoming film, Kojima Productions also announced that a sequel to the game was also in work.

Death Stranding is a highly cinematic game like many of Kojima's projects. It has a surreal plot and visuals.

The game's story follows Sam, a porter who traverses the post-apocalyptic US in order to deliver cargo to isolated cities full of survivors.

The country was almost destroyed after an event known as the "Death Stranding." During the said event, the afterlife partially merged with the world of the living.

Sam has to evade bandits and otherworldly entities known as BTs while making his deliveries.

Many actors from film and television are involved in the game, including Reedus, Léa Seydoux, and Mads Mikkelsen.

In addition to the Death Stranding movie project, Kojima also revealed during the interview that he is currently working on a short film that got initially shelved because of the pandemic.
