SynthID Watermark and Identification Features

Google acknowledges how fast generative AI technologies are evolving. The advancements make it harder for simple tools to accurately identify which is AI or not. Moreover, photo grabbing is a sensitive issue for image creators as it could be easily grabbed online by cropping or editing the watermark out.

SynthID users has the ability to add watermark to their images that are imperceptible to human eye yet detectable if edited even with the simplest techniques. If the image was made by Imagen, SynthID can scan the digital watermark to double check.

"SynthID isn't foolproof against extreme image manipulations, but it does provide a promising technical approach for empowering people and organizations to work with AI-generated content responsibly," Google DeepMind wrote in a blog post.

Google DeepMind Promotes Responsible AI Use

Despite the intricate features of watermarking and identification of images, Google DeepMind assured that they will continuously work on creating AI-generated content responsibly.

SynthID is designed to work perfectly without compromising the original image quality. In the future, SynthID has the possibility of working beyond images such as audio, video, and text.

As of writing, SynthID is available to selected Vertex AI customers that are using Imagen.
