Van Gogh Museum Fires Staff After Pokemon Trading Card Issue

The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam reportedly fired four employees and suspended security guards and public service workers after the misconduct that happened during the Pokemon exhibit.

According to the report, one particular employee also stole a box of Pokemon cards which are exclusive to the special exhibit.

Van Gogh Museum Employees Broke Codes of Conduct at Pokemon Exhibit

Last September 2023, the Van Gogh Museum and the Pokemon Company collaborated to create a special exhibit that will commemorate Pokemon's 50th anniversary. The exhibit was open from September 28, 2023, to January 7, 2024.

Due to the event's extreme popularity, scalpers quickly swarmed the exhibit to hoard the special Pokemon cards. The merch was quickly sold out only days after it opened, leading to the company apologizing to fans.

However, the gravest incident is that several employees have allegedly provided ticket purchase information to other people. Aside from that, an employee was also charged with embezzling the cards.

The Pokemon Company Events Face Issues With Scalpers

Before the event, the museum was forced to remove the Pokemon promo cards to prevent any controversy and further safety concerns. According to the report, Pikachu with the Grey Felt Hat was the most popular card at the event.

Previously, the company also faced a similar issue with a Happy Meal collaboration with McDonald's. Scalpers were quick to hoard the cards which were resold to other people at an expensive price.

Meanwhile, The Pokemon Company has promised that it is taking steps to discourage and prevent scalping. For instance, the latest Happy Meal collaboration last year had a policy of one toy at a time with the meal to prevent hoarding.
