7 Best, Well-Written Video Game Characters of All Time

There are hundreds of thousands of games out there that you can play on various devices, yet only relatively few of them stand out. Some remember the game because of the story, and the story is only great because of the characters that played their parts. Here are some of the best and most memorable video game characters of all time.

1. Kratos

God of War has been around for a while as the first game was released back in 2005. It started out with a Spartan demigod turned god who resorted to bloodshed when his family was taken away, to a loving father who tried to avoid conflict as long as he could. In the more recent titles, we saw a softer side to the battle-hardened Kratos from the earlier games.

2. Ezio Auditore de Firenze

While Altair will always have a place in the Assassin's Creed fanbase's hearts for being the first assassin we met, Ezio stands out in more ways than one among all the franchise's protagonists. From a young oblivious boy born into Italian nobility, he trained and turned into one of the most influential assassins throughout time as he set out to avenge the decimation of his family.

3. Lara Croft

Before studios started creating strong female leads for video game titles, there was Lara Croft. Having a female main character may not seem so progressive now, but it was when the first Tomb Raider game came out in 1996. Those who have played the game have grown to love the smart archeologist who broke stereotypes by showing that she can handle her own.

4. Aloy

The Horizon franchise arguably has one of the most beautiful virtual worlds out there, and we can't help but appreciate it more with a strong character like Aloy at the center of it all. In Horizon Zero Dawn, we already saw how capable the red-haired warrior was in both defending herself and saving the world, and we just so her grow into a better version of herself by Horizon Forbidden West.

5. Geralt of Rivia

There's something about big strong men turning soft for their children, and Geralt certainly fits that criteria. Throughout the Witcher series, Geralt has been through all kinds of hell fighting through monsters and people, so he has the right to be as cynical as he is, but with all that he has met and found like Yennefer and Ciri, the Witcher was slowly humanized throughout the series.

The Last of Us is a recognizable title among gamers, mostly because of the relationship he has with his somewhat adoptive daughter, Ellie. You'll notice an ongoing theme here the same as Geralt and Kratos. Bitter with the world after he loses his daughter, his emotional wounds begin to heal when he accepts a job to smuggle a young kid, learning to love her like a daughter as time passes.

7. Arthur Morgan

This list is not complete without our favorite outlaw, Arthur Morgan. Even with their ways of robbing and killing, you can't help but sympathize with the gunslinger for caring for the gang and staying loyal despite it all, as well as being kind when it matters most. Most who have played the game can tell you that they shed a tear when Arthur reached the end of the line.
