iOS 7.1 untethered jailbreak pops up, but there’s a catch (VIDEO)

Apple's latest iOS 7.1 has apparently been jailbroken already, but the untethered jailbreak seems to work only on the iPhone 4 for now.

Many iPhone users choose to jailbreak their devices to escape Apple's walled garden, but Apple patched the Evasi0n jailbreak with the release of iOS 7.1. Consequently, iPhone, iPad, and iPod users who updated their devices from iOS 7.0.6 to the latest iOS 7.1 can no longer enjoy freedom, nor go back to the earlier version of Apple's mobile OS.

While no iOS 7.1 jailbreak is officially available at this point, a new video shows a jailbroken iPhone 4 rocking it up in untethered mode. The video comes from seasoned hacker Winocm, who shows the phone from screen to screen, including the Settings screen that confirms the operating system as iOS 7.1.

On the other hand, although this video shows the jailbreak is up and running, the iOS 7.1 untethered jailbreak has not been released yet. Moreover, it seems that this particular jailbreak doesn't work for devices with A5 chips or higher, which means that the latest iGadgets are out of the picture for now.

According to one comment to the video, the jailbreak only works on Apple devices packing an A4 chip. This means that the jailbreak will work for the iPhone 4, the original iPad, or the fourth-generation iPod touch, but not their successors. The same account that posted this comment, "All things jailbreak," claims that Winocm and fellow jailbreak enthusiast iH8sn0w are working hard to crack iDevices with A5 chips. If they make it, the jailbreak should be available for more iPhone and iPad models soon enough.

Meanwhile, Apple has already started working on its next iOS 8, which is expected to roll out sometime later this year. When Apple releases iOS 8 it will again patch any jailbreaks that may become available for iOS 7.1, and hackers will have to start all over again.

For now, iOS users who want to enjoy jailbroken devices can stick with iOS 7.0.6, if they haven't already upgraded their devices to the new iOS 7.1. Otherwise, iFans will just have to wait for the next jailbreak to become available. In the meantime, check out the video below.
