HTC Vive vs Oculus Rift: Hardware, Design & Games Comparison

Ever since the virtual reality trend started to pick up some actual ground, the public has been testing the waters. Since then, the HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift have stood out across the platform. Of course, one cannot be put over the other without some bias - it lies in what the user gives importance to.

As Tech Radar reports, both devices sport two OLED with a combined resolution of 2160 x 1200. Separately, each eye of the user gets its own 1080 x 1200. They also share a 90Hz rate, which results in about 233 pixels changing the view every second.

Both headsets also measure out a total 110 degree field of view, making the VR experience very immersive. Lastly, both devices need to be connected to a powerful Windows machine in order to truly be effective.

However, the HTC Vive has 37 sensors in the headset, which allows for a very fluid sense of movement. It also has a front facing camera, which when paired with the right software, could result in a different experience.

Furthermore, this front camera warns wearers when they are getting too close to a wall or any other obstacle for safety reasons. On the other hand, the Oculus Rift sports a 360-degree head position tracker.

When it comes to design, the HTC Vive is the heavier and bulkier option. It weighs about 555g as opposed to the Oculus Rift's 470g. While the difference may not seem so large, interested buyers need to consider that the entire device is carried on one's head and movement should be free flowing.

When it comes to games, each gadget has its own winners. For example, the HTC Vive boasts of "The Lab." According to PC advisor, this is the starting point for all Vive users. It is simple and allows users to perform a multitude of tasks, from archery to observing the solar system. It also has "Star Wars: Trials on Tatooine," "FATED: The Silent Oath" and "Disney Movies VR."

Meanwhile, the Oculus Rift has a number of relatively indie games, as reported by Wearable. These include "The Last Hope," "Wilson's Heart" and "Superhot VR." It does, however, also include "Star Trek: Bridge Crew."
