Xiaomi VR Headset Released In China; How It Compares To The Oculus Rift

Xiaomi has recently released its VR headset in China. Compared to the Oculus Rift or the upcoming Samsung VR Gear, the Xiaomi VR headset still has a lot of catching up to do.

The Xiaomi VR headset could accommodate various smartphone screens sizes from a minimum 4.7-inch to a maximum 5.7-inch. The Chinese VR headset sports a dual zipper with two forward openings in order to better fit the mobile device. Xiaomi used EVA and Lycra materials because it does not irritate the skin and is much more comfortable to use, according to the Chinese smartphone maker. A more detailed description of its hardware specs is expected to come out as soon as it's made available.

The Oculus Rift on the other hand, is a head-mounted VR headset equipped with two OLED displays with screen resolutions of 1200x1080p processing at around 90Hz. The Oculus headset has a 360-degree IR sensor, accelerometer, gyroscope, headphones and microphone as well. Whereas the Mi VR headset weighs around 209 grams, the Oculus is heavier at 363 grams.

The Xiaomi VR headset will need the MI VR companion app in order to play 2D or 3D films as well as games, according to the Indian Express. The accompanying app is an open platform and sourced most of its contents from local and international media groups namely Youku, QIY and CondeNast.

In contrast, the Oculus Rift is geared more towards PC users and games such as "Eve: Valkyrie" or "Lucky's Tale," according to Engadget. There is also the issue of price. The Xiomi VR headset is still in its beta stage but it is available already on the company's website for $29.99. The Oculus Rift is far pricier, costing around $600. Oculus users would also need a PC capable of running the current games out there.

The Xiaomi VR headset is overall inferior to the Oculus Rift but the low price is the biggest factor that will pull the majority of VR buyers to it.
