Xbox One, Scropio News: Microsoft To Focus On Hardware Upgrades In The Future

During this year's E3, Xbox Head Phil Spencer had a few things to say about the upcoming Xbox Scorpio. And while these were exciting statements to make, they were confusing as well. Fortunately, there has since been some light shed on the topic.

Spencer had previously stated that games and accessories will be supported by all the versions and generations of the Xbox One, including the upcoming Project Scorpio. But logically, this would mean that all consoles would be made up of the same software, that only the hardware would change. However, Aaron Greenberg, Microsoft's head of Xbox games marketing, clarified this with Engadget.

According to Greenberg, Spencer simply meant that all current games and accessories would be compatible with the Xbox Scorpio, as well as all other consoles that come after it. In other words, the linearity only goes one way.

Normally, the introduction of a new generation of a console - any console - would mean the death of a game. Unless the game is specially made compatible for a new console. This is a practice that has been adopted by plenty of other gaming manufacturers, including Microsoft. The trouble is, it is an inefficient practice. This is so both because of the possible loss of a loyal fan-base and the effort it takes for the company to keep it.

It would seem that Microsoft has adopted the idea that it would be better to focus more, but not solely on, hardware. Theoretically, the tech company could rely on previous software and enhance their hardware more often. Of course, this in no way means that games will not be churned out. After all, Microsoft has every intention to incorporate virtual reality and corresponding exclusive games for the Xbox Scorpio.

"We think the future is without console generations," said Greenberg. "Everything you have continues forward and it works."
