Nintendo Update: Super Mario Maker Is Coming To 3DS But Has Drawbacks

Super Mario Maker for 3DS will be a little different from the Wii U version. Nintendo showcased the new handheld level-building game at the Nintendo Direct presentation on Thursday which was 3DS-centric.

For those who need to catch up, Super Mario Maker is a game builder and publishing tool and also a video game, this allows players to build their own levels basing upon the Super Mario series via the Wii U GamePad, the creator/player then publishes those levels to the Internet for everyone to enjoy. Players can pattern their levels after the gameplay and graphic style of Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, New Super Mario Bros. U and Super Mario World, with the respective styles of physics, mechanics and enemy AI.

Some of the elements are boxed-in to specific game styles while others may be added to styles that previously didn't have i.e. deploying Boos in Super Mario Bros.

What's the catch with the 3DS version?

You can still be able to create or build your own Mario levels coming from a plethora of themes. The downside: it seems like you will not be able to publish them online. However, you can share them via StreetPass or local connections. You can also start building stages and have your friends finish them as you can pass along incomplete builds. Some Wii U version player-made stages will also be accessible, but you can't search them by course ID. They will just pop up as random entries from the 100-Mario Challenge.

Wii U users who are fond of Mario Maker rejoiced as it was really hoped that a 3DS version would surface for their convenience. However, the excitement has been blurred out for a bit due to the limitations. It is hoped that the final output would still bring the full features as of the Wii U version over the next updates after release.

Super Mario Maker 3DS will be launched on Dec. 2, are you getting one? Please feel free to drop a comment below and let us know!

In the meantime, enjoy this launch trailer of the game.
