Qualcomm Unveils New Snapdragon Chip Brings VR To Your Mobile

Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 835 processor brings Virtual Reality (VR) to your mobile devices. The company released the technical details of the latest flagship product in the Snapdragon 835.

Qualcomm Unveils The New Snapdragon Chip

The new Qualcomm Snapdragon 835's name was mentioned last year when it came to light that the American multinational semiconductor and telecommunications equipment company was working with Samsung to produce the new range of chips which power many of our smartphones and tablets today.

Last November, according to ZDNet, in Qualcomm Snapdragon Summit in New York, the company said that the new processor, the Snapdragon 835, is based on Samsung's 10-nanometer (nm) FinFET process technology. The protege of the Snapdragon 820, the 835 is smaller, more compact and very lightweight than its predecessor. It also comes in at 14nm FinFET and consumed by 25 percent more power.

According to Qualcomm's senior director of product management Travis Lanier, the Snapdragon 825 supports up to 11 hours of mobile device use or even media streaming for approximately seven hours as well as with 4K video playback. In addition to that, devices powered by the chip will be able to handle on average three hours of continuous 4K video capture or approximately two hours worth of VR gaming.

"We are at the cusp of VR being good enough," said Keith Kressin, senior vice president and product management of Qualcomm. "We're not quite there yet but we are almost there."

VR is one of the major tech trends which has prompted Qualcomm to focus on enhancing power performance, graphics and video on your mobile. As reported by PCAdvisor, Qualcomm has ensured the Snapdragon 835 can support 15ms motions to photon latency, which is crucial for not feeling ill. The chip is also Google Daydream ‘ready’.

The new company's chip Snapdragon 835 has been built for "extreme" pixel quality, low latency, spherical 360-degree view support, high audio quality as well as precise motion tracking through a VIO subsystem. Qualcomm has also moved to support the HR10 Ultra HD on the latest Snapdragon 835 chip and supports 4K streaming at 60fps.
