Gaming's First Vibrator Celebrates Its 15th Anniversary

On Jan. 7, 2002, the first vibrator gaming device was released on the PS2 console specifically intended for the special version of Rez. And now, 15 years later, the device still stand tall amidst having a limitation to its overall function. To commemorate the 15th anniversary of the Trance Vibrator, let's take a retrospect about its conception and how it all started.

Trance Vibrator: First Vibrator Gaming Device

Before we start, keep in mind that when we refer to the term "first vibrator gaming device," it meant that it's the first of its kind to offer vibration as its primary function as there are other gaming devices that were released a lot earlier, such as the Dualshock controller and Rumble pack that offer a similar feature as well but not entirely as such. Here's the story about the conception of the Trance Vibrator.

In an interview with Eurogamer, Tetsuya Mizuguchi the creator of Trance Vibrator said: "That was my idea," (referring to the conception of the device). "That was kind of a joke, but a very serious joke. No sexual meaning," He added when asked about the other random ideas that people are getting when referring about the device.

The Trance Vibrator works exclusively for the special version of Rez, a rail shooter music video game that was published by Sega for PlayStation 2 and Dreamcast. It works by vibrating (pulsing) in sync with the music. The game was a phenomenal hit, spawning multiple remakes and was carried over to the PS3, Xbox 360 and the PS4 platforms.

Trance Vibrator's Comeback

In the same interview, the Mizuguchi hinted that the team is preparing for Trance Vibrator and Rez's debut in the VR platforms. Considering its immense popularity in the past, particularly in Japan and the myriad potential of the device in the VR console, it wouldn't come as a surprise if we'll be seeing other gaming vibrators soon.
