Detroit Medical Center In Hot Water Again For Dirty Instruments

Regulators are reviewing whether to reopen investigation of the Detroit Medical Center. After just one day after the state ended its probe on dirty instruments in the center, an operation was interrupted by a filthy surgical tool. The DMC was notified on December 22 by officials from the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs that it was no longer in violation of eight health codes. The three-month investigation was prompted by a series of articles by The News which exposed longstanding complaints regarding dirty instruments involving five hospitals of DMC’s midtown Detroit campus.

The next day after receiving the letter, a laparoscopic grasper which was covered in old blood and ooze was delivered to an operating room at Children’s Hospital of Michigan. The filthy instrument was marked as sterile was to be used by surgeon Dr. Scott Langenburg in a gall bladder surgery of an 18-year-olld Armada woman. The instrumented was intercepted and replaced.

According to Jason Moon, communications director of LARA, the department that includes the Bureau of Community and Health Systems that conducted the earlier investigation of DMC, said that the state is reviewing the incident. According to Moon, the next course of action will be determined by the bureau after a thorough investigation is completed according to an article by The Detroit News.

Dr. Anthony J. Tedeschi is the new DMC CEO after former head Joe Mullany unexpectedly resigned. The hospital system reports that Tadeschi is the CEO of Tenet’s four-hospital Chicago market and the top executive of Weiss Memorial Hospital in Chicago. Weiss Memorial Hospital is a 236-bed facility with more than 800 staff.

Tadeschi stated in a release that he looks forward to being part of the Detroit Medical Center, a heath system that is dedicated to innovating clinical care, helping patients recover faster and stay healthier longer and training the next generation of healthcare professionals. According to Tadeschi, DMC is woven into the fabric of the community and plays an important role in the health and wellbeing of the city according to report by M Live.
