Creators of the show gave a glimpse of what Sean Astin's role would be. The actor would be playing the role of Bob Newby, an employee who would greatly affect Winona Ryder's life, romantically speaking.

He would be playing the role of Dr. Owens, who would eventually have a say at the Department of Energy regarding the weird things that had happened in Hawkins.
