MediaTek Will Exit Windows 10 ARM PC Market

With x86 dominance, MediaTek doesn't see an opportunity in the market for Windows 10 ARM PCs. In consequence, the company has decided to exit the race for ARM processors dedicated to Windows 10 PCs.

MediaTek Gives Up ARM Race For Windows 10 PCs

According to Computerworld, Windows PCs with ARM processors are making a grand return later this year, despite a turbulent past. According to Liliputing, upcoming "cellular PCs" with Snapdragon chips will include laptops with Bluetooth 5 support, always-connected 4G LTE connectivity and long battery life. ARM chips may provide certain advantages when it comes to built-in wireless connectivity, graphics performance, and energy efficiency.

However, Windows 10 PCs with ARM processors will only run on Qualcomm chips. MediaTek, one of the top ARM chipmakers, sees this market as a limited opportunity. For this reason, the company decided to give up the opportunity to put its ARM-based chips in Windows PCs.

History Of ARM Chips Technology

According to tech experts, ARM technology has had a turbulent history with Windows. That's another reason for MediaTek to stay out of the Windows 10 PCs market, even if its chips are already used in Chromebooks. ARM getting into PCs is a risky proposition, somehow similar to Intel trying to get into smartphones, according to Finbarr Moynihan, general manager of sales at MediaTek.

Companies such as AMD and Intel are dominating the PCs market with their x86 chips. However, Intel ultimately had to quit making chips for handsets after failing in its attempt to compete with the dominant ARM technology in smartphones. ARM's last attempt to get into Windows PCs was also unsuccessful.

For tablets with ARM chips, Microsoft designed its Windows RT OS version of Windows 8. Microsoft, Asus, and Dell were among the few companies that made Windows RT tablets. However, they all later pulled their devices off the market. Due to user confusion and incompatibility with x86, Windows RT ended to be a failure.
