Last Of Us 2: Is Joel Already Dead?

One of the most anticipated survival horror games for 2017 is the Last of Us 2 - the sequel to the critically acclaimed 2013 of the same title developed by Naughty Dog. After the release of Resident Evil 7, fans have been looking for clues as to how the upcoming sequel would par against the latter. Despite the reticence of Naughty Dog, the trailer of Last of Us 2 may shed light as to how the story may progress in the upcoming sequel.

Last Of Us 2 Trailer

Following the recent trailer of Last of Us 2, fans have been speculating regarding the progress of the story. However, before jumping into the theory, it would be better to take a retrospect about all the details that are officially known. First, during the last panel discussion on PSX 2016, it was revealed that the setting is roughly five years later. Next, Director Neil Druckmann said that the sequel will be a "story about hate." However, it is still unclear as to which main character the story will revolve in. From here on, many fans have theorized about the upcoming sequel. Here's the popular one:

Last Of Us 2 : Joel Is Dead?

There has been a widespread theory regarding the death of the main character in the story - most particularly, Joel. This notion had surfaced due to the character's peculiar appearance in the trailer. First, the main character looked like an apparition in the preview. Second, despite Joel's scanty appearance on the teaser trailer, fans pointed out that he did not seem to have aged - despite the five-year time-skip: his clothes were unusually clean, with no stain of blood at all, unlike Ellie who seemed to have a ragged appearance and drenched with blood.

It is quite clear that Ellie could have murdered the fireflies that were inside the house during the trailer which further fuels the theory that Joel may actually be a ghost during this setting or could very well be, a memory, which Ellie recalled after the murder. If this is the case, it somehow backs the idea about Ellie's hatred towards the fireflies and the death of Joel. One popular theory about Joel's death is that the character could have committed a suicide especially as he was frequently seen carrying a gun during the entire video.

The song featured during the video also foreshadows Joel's supposed suicide. Here are some of the lyrics taken from the song: "I fear no evil because I'm blind to it all. My mind and my gun they comfort me," one part said. Followed by: "I came upon a man at the top of the hill, called himself the savior of the human race. But I said: "how can you save the world from itself?"

This theory looks solid from the evidence displayed except for one fact - the game features a buddy combat system which means that Ellie needs a partner or at least an ally in-game. This means that it is either Joel is alive or there could be another character that will be introduced in the sequel. Check back for more Last of Us news and updates!
