In this long period, he has learned to control the molecules around him and has gained the ability to create avatars for himself, such as Kurt Russel. Gunn goes on to say that since Ego is a lonely character that he may have ventured off to find love, and eventually found Quill's mom.
When Gunn was asked how "Guardians of the Galaxy" Vol. 2 will fit in Phase Four, the director goes on to say that the story of Vol. 2 is purely about the guardians, and as such, there is no connection to the rest of the MCU.
