Motorola schedules August 1 Moto X event in NYC

Motorola has scheduled a Moto X event on August 1 in New York City. The company will unveil the highly anticipated and customizable Moto X smartphone to the press and finally put an end to all of the speculation.

Before Motorola officially announced the name of its upcoming smartphone, the device was simply called the "X Phone" and created quite a stir on the Internet with rumored features. Motorola CEO, Dennis Woodside confirmed the smartphone at AllThingsD in May and claimed it was the company's "hero phone," he also revealed its official name, the Moto X. He claimed the device would be "contextually aware "of its surroundings by using special sensors that would activate different features without the user ever needing to touch the handset.

A recently leaked video gave us a demonstration of some of the Moto X's new features. We got to see how the smartphone would use its always on sensors to anticipate what its user wanted to do by using voice and gesture controls even while the phone is powered off. It will also include a new notification system feature called Active Update that will use a blinking icon of the app that is pushing the notification on the display. The demo suggests that by allowing the user to easily see what kind of notification it is, instead of using the traditional blinking light, users will be able to decide whether they want to take action or not.

The Moto X is also expected to offer users the ability to customize the smartphone to their liking through the use of different color and designed back plates. There is still a lot we don't know about the device and Motorola plans to reveal all come August 1.

The company is holding a press event in New York City where it will unveil the Moto X to the press. We should get a better idea of just how customizable the smartphone will be, its official specs, and when we can expect to buy it. Current rumors have claimed that Google has given the company a $500 million marketing budget to ensure the Moto X is a success. It is also believed that the amount of cash Google is putting up has already secured the Moto X to see a simultaneous release on all four major carriers in the U.S.

We'll have to wait until August 1 to hear the full details and see if the Moto X will live up to the hype it has created for months.
