Apple Music Is (Finally) in Roku’s Various Products — Which Are They?

Apple Music is now on Roku.

According to Roku's official announcement, Apple's music app can now be found and used on Roku's products, such as its streaming devices.

The app will have a one-month trial period before charging Roku customers who signed up for it $10 per month.

Apple Music Subscription Details

A report from Engadget mentioned that Roku customers who wish to pay for Apple Music would get access to a music library of more than 90 million songs, 30,000 curated playlists, and watch music videos in 4K. The subscription would also give customers access to original shows, concerts, exclusives, personalized recommendations, and Apple Music Radio, per Tech Crunch.

Additionally, Apple is also available in Roku's other products aside from its streaming players. These other devices consist of Roku TV models and Roku premium audio products like the Strembar.

The addition of Apple Music to the Roku platform could help Apple expand its customer base on the platform by attracting people who are put off by Spotify, among other music streaming apps.

The service comes with a one-month trial period, as mentioned earlier. After this period, customers can either cancel their subscription or choose their subscription by paying a starting price of $9.99.

Upon closer inspection, it seems Roku's Apple Music app follows Apple's pricing, meaning that Rou didn't add anything else to the app's subscription fee as a way of offsetting Roku for adding a way for its customers to enter into a paid subscription through its Roku channel store.

A $9.99 per month subscription tier is for individuals, according to 9to5Mac. Meanwhile, families, or up to sic users, can get an Apple Music subscription at $14.99 a month. Lastly, college students get a much lower $4.99 per month charge for Apple Music.

However, this could mean that the two companies negotiated a special deal or that Apple decided to give 20% of Apple Music's revenue share to Roku for hosting the app on its platform.

Roku declined to comment on its contract and agreement with Apple.

The app isn't as complete as much as one would think it should. Tech Radar reports that Roku's Apple Music does not support Apple Music's audio features, spatial audio with Dolby Atmos, and Lossless Audio, per a Roku representative.

Why Have Apple Music Now?

Both companies have not made it clear why Apple or Roku decided to team up with each other aside from propagating Apple Music to other streaming platforms. In fact, the last streaming platform Apple Music was made available were Amazon's Fire TV and Google's Chromecast, which happened in 2019 and 2020, respectively, per Apple Insider

Fire TV has around 28,500 subscribers, according to Social Blade at the time of publication, while Chromecast has

With the addition of Apple Music, Roku now has most of the major music streaming services on its platform.
