Spotify to Purchase Wordle-Inspired Viral Music Trivia Game Heardle

A new game is coming to Spotify!

Spotify is getting Heardle, the Wordle-inspired viral music trivia game. This is what the audio streaming company announced on Tuesday.

Heardle is the first game acquisition of Spotify, according to The Verge. And the company hopes for it to act as a music discovery tool, at the same time keep music nerds engaged.

Acquisition of Heardle is Spotify's Way of Innovating the Platform

According to Jeremy Erlich, global head of music at Spotify, Spotify's acquisition of Heardle is the company's way of innovating the platform for fans.

"We are always looking for innovative and playful ways to enhance music discovery and help artists reach new fans," said Erlich.

Furthermore, he added: "Heardle has proven to be a really fun way to connect millions of fans with songs they know and love and with new songs and a way to compete with their friends as to who has the best musical knowledge."

For now, the game remains a standalone website. According to the company, the game has millions of current players.

The audio streaming company did not disclose the acquisition price for Heardle.

Before expanding to other countries and languages, Heardle's Spotify integration is starting in the US, the UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

As per The Verge, "the company also plans to eventually integrate Heardle "more fully" into the app." However, as of writing, it did not divulge yet how or when that will happen.

Despite being a small company compared to Spotify's other acquisition, purchasing Heardle seems like a smart move for the audio streaming company because it hits on what users love about the streamer in the first place.

While listening to music can be basically  done anywhere now, Spotify has always been good at shareable features that engage users.

How Heardle is Played

Heardle, which was launched in March, is similar to Wordle. However, instead of trying to guess a word, players must try to guess a song within a few opening bars.

Players get six guesses, "with each hint giving a few more seconds of music to inform their next answer," according to Deadline. Ultimately, players get a chance to discover the entirety of the song, whether or not they guessed it correctly.

The action of Spotify to acquire Heardle sees the music streaming service and podcast producer move into interactive gaming.

This is an opportunity for fan's musical discovery. With the game subscribers might rediscover old tracks or find new artists as "recent Heardles have included acts as diverse as Arcade Fire, Jennifer Lopez, Journey, Michael Jackson and The Smiths," according to Deadline.

Spotify plans to keep the game free to play. Starting today, at the end of the game, players can listen to the full song on the platform.

The game will initially launch on Spotify in select countries but it will roll it out further internationally.

"Since its debut, the game has quickly built a loyal following, and it aligns with our plans to deepen interactivity across the Spotify ecosystem," said Erlich.
