According to Business Wire, a new research from Strategy Analytics indicates that, in Q2 2022, the total number of smartphones shipped worldwide decreased by 7% year-on-year to 291 million devices.

Xiaomi, OPPO (including OnePlus), and Vivo remained in the top five smartphone brands to ship devices in Q2 2022. Meanwhile, Samsung tops the market share in the worldwide smartphone market, followed by Apple.

Apple's Q2 2022 Market Share Was Its Best Since 2012

Apple has a 16% global market share in Q2 2022, according to Woody Oh, Director at Strategy Analytics. The tech giant had a strong quarter, driven by the iPhone 13 series, whose sales in the U.S., China, and other important markets kept rising.

Oh noted that about 48 million iPhones were shipped by the Cupertino-based tech giant,  which now has the highest Q2 market share in the last ten years.

With a strong 22% market share in Q2 2022, Samsung led the world's smartphone market. Since 2020, this is the vendor's best second quarter result in terms of market share. Samsung shipped approximately 63 million smartphones in the Q2.

According to Yiwen Wu, Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics, about 40 million smartphones were shipped by Xiaomi in Q2 2022. Its global market share was 14%, down from 17% the year prior.

Meanwhile, OPPO (OnePlus)  and Vivo were hailed as the fourth and fifth smartphone brands with the largest market share in Q2 2022, respectively.

OPPO (OnePlus) held the fourth position and accounted for 10% of the worldwide smartphone market in Q2 2022.

With 9% of the worldwide smartphone market, Vivo remained in fifth place in Q2 2022.

Nevertheless, according to Linda Sui, Senior Director at Strategy Analytics, smartphone volume growth has decreased for the fourth consecutive quarter. She noted that the Q2 2022 smartphone market suffered from COVID interruption and geopolitical difficulties.

Apple's Shipments to China Increased

Apple shipped 9.9 million iPhones to China in Q2 2022, up 25% year-on-year, according to a study by market research firm Canalys. CNBC reported that this is still true even though there were lockdowns in large cities due to Covid.

Despite a 10% decline in the country's overall smartphone market due to a resurgence of Covid, the Cupertino company fared reasonably well in China from April to June.

According to UBS, iPhone shipments increased 227% from the previous year in June.

The reopening of cities and the "618" shopping festival, which culminates on June 18, both contributed to the June recovery, said Apple CEO Tim Cook.

"We think that the net of that was still a negative, but some of it did rebound by June time frame," Cook said during Apple's earnings call.

Apple Will Hire More Deliberately

As previously reported, Cook claims that although Apple will continue to hire new workers, it will now be doing so in a more "deliberate" manner due to the current state of the economy.

Early in July, Apple's hiring slowdown was made public amid mounting concerns about an impending economic downturn.
