Disney Animation Celebrates 100 Years by Giving Its Wishing Star an Origin Story

Disney has an important character that is not highlighted in previous films - the wishing star.

This wishing star is the one Jiminy Cricket sings about in "When you Wish Upon a Star." This is also the same star where Princess Tiana wishes for her restaurant, and the one Simba looks up when he's longing for the presence of his father.

Now, this wishing star is finally getting its own story told. Disney, during the D23 event, announced that they are making the animated film "Wish."

'Wish' to Tell the Story of Disney Magic, Perfect Film to Celebrate the Studio's Centennial

According to Gizmodo, "Wish" will tell how the wishing star becomes the source of Disney magic. This wishing star has "guided the tales" of Disney, according to Collider.

According to Walt Disney Animation's Chief Creative Officer Jennifer Lee, "Wish" is the "perfect story to celebrate the studio's centennial."

"Wish" is styled as a "nostalgic love letter to classic Disney animation." The movie is based on the Disney legacy.

According to Collider, the animated film will follow the story of  Asha who "is driven, incredibly smart, and an optimist with a sharp wit."

In the story, Asha discovers a darkness in the kingdom. Nobody else sees this darkness except her. Therefore, she must look for ways to help the people who are important to her.

Already in the stage of desperation, Asha decided to make an "impassioned plea" to the heavens. With all her heart, she wished for guidance and help. Because of her pure and honest wish, an actual "star" from the sky was called down.

Meanwhile, Valentino, a goat, has his wish granted. He gained the ability to speak. "Wish" then asks a very curious and interesting question "How did the wishing star, upon which so many characters wish, come to be?"

Wish Will be the Next Disney Classic

The animation style of "Wish" will be a timeless watercolor aesthetic in addition to traditional modern 3D animation.

This goes to say that the film is not simply a "trip down memory lane."

During the D23 presentation, the images and concept art shown by Disney are truly amazing.

According to Lee, the film has a special place in their hearts, saying that "The film means so much to all of us at the studio and has been an incredible collaboration across all the generations."

Wish will be directed by Chris Buck (Frozen) and Fawn Veerasunthorn ("Raya and the Last Dragon"). Lee will serve as co-writer of the animated film.

"Wish" will star Ariana DeBose ("West Side Story") as Asha. Meanwhile, Alan Tudyk ("Encanto") will play Valentino, the talking goat.

Composing the music for the film is singer-songwriter Julia Michaels. Combining this with the likes of DeBose and Tudyk, "Wish" will easily become one of the most anticipated films in 2023.

Collider predicted that "Wish" is going to be the next Disney classic just like "Frozen." "Wish" be released in theaters in November 2023.
